WELCOME TO DAVES TOP 5 SONGS OF ALL TIME
.
as i said on my site its bloody hard to pick just 5 songs out of the thousands you hear over the years
but i took a leaf out of phils book (nice lad, too tall) and got it down to 20 (listed on my site) and chose my final 5 from them
so here goes
.
.
number 5
martyn joseph - please sir
.
i love songs that make me cry
.
the first time i heard this guy was at a tom robinson fan club gig in (i think) Camden. just him and an acoustic guitar. this was the second song he played and was about a little boy in the welsh valleys asking his teacher why his dad was so sad. I sat and listened gobsmacked and by the end both me and sam were in tears. he has and is still producing some of the best music i have heard and i could have chosen loads by him (dolphins-the good in me is dead-cardiff bay)
if you get a chance he is well worth seeing live. the best version of this track is on the don't talk about love live cd
some may say its a bit cheesy
bollox
its beautiful
.
.
number 4
midnight oil - one country
.
my fave band of all time
.
they actually started life way back in '73 but are best known for their '88 top 10 hit beds are burning. from the start the main focus of the band was Peter Garret , the seven foot tall bald singer who dances a bit like me. the first time their manager-to-be saw them live the roadie was soundchecking the vocal mike while standing on a beer crate and securing amps and monitors to the stage with six inch nails. a punk band when they started and even though the sound matured and mellowed to a certain extent they were still punk right up to them splitting (Garrett has been an australian labour party member of the house of representatives since 2004) I could have filled this list with five of their songs (truganini-beds are burning-forgotten years-short memory) but went for this one
a bit of a slowy , but it has all the oils trademarks , the slightly dodgy lead vocal , the battling guitars , the enviromental/social message.......and those bloody backing vocals

.

.

number 3
twisted sister
we’re not gonna take it

.
Every time I hear this song it just cheers me up.

.
one of my fave bands way back when and this has got to be their best moment ever. singer dee snider is still one of the best frontmen i have ever seen , getting everyone involved with his rather colourful onstage banter , and even though they looked daft that was all part of the don't take any shit from anyone , you are who you are attitude. christ these guys were more punk than most of the bands who stuck that label on there bondage shirts just to get a deal.

and that voice!
imagine alice cooper after gargling petrol and eating two dozen razor blades and you're about halfway there
It’s loud, it’s clichéd, it’s silly , a bit like me

.
and if we can’t have a good laugh every now and then what’s the point
(ooh and he had lovely hair)

.

.
number 2
The temptations
ball of confusion

.

and the band played on
.
I think the reason I love so many different types of music is the fact that I am the youngest of six. So from an early age I heard everything from queen to gilbert o’sullivan to boney m to guy mitchell. But I always loved the motown chartbusters albums (the ones with the tin foil and big fly-like spaceship covers) and the one I kept going back to was number 5 - Stevie wonder/Jackson 5/marvin gaye and this track by the temptations, it all starts with that totally awesome bassline before all the different vocals kick in and list everthing that was so great about america at the time , racism- drugs - gun control – unemployment – end the war.
Oh how things change

.

and now finally

the big one

numero uno

top of the pile

king of the hill

is it going to be thrashing guitars , rumbling bass , powerhouse drumming and amazing vocal acrobatics?????

.

no

just some geeky guy with a piano

.
number 1

.

ben folds
the luckiest

.

just the most beautiful song ever written
it’s the words he uses , the kind of things you often think to yourself but never say because they may sound stupid or clumsy. and the way the song says there is someone for everybody , and that just the knowing that is enough to keep you going. but if you’re actually lucky enough to end up with that someone then it does’nt matter about all the other shit in life , you are the luckiest just to be together

.
beautiful!

.

(dedicated to Linda)

AND NOW FOR
/
PAULS TOP 5
'
5, THE CLASH
WHITE MAN IN HAMMERSMITH PALAIS
.

This one sums up The Clash. Cartoon like political lyrics, anger, irony and real white reggae.
I loved it the first time I heard it. When it gets played people dance, smile and remember. Joe Strummer and Mick Jones at their rebel best with cogent stripped down song writing. The stand out moment has to be the line "They got Burtons suits, huh you think its funny??, turning rebellion into money!"

.

4, BE BOP DELUXE

ADVENTURES IN A YORKSHIRE LANDSCAPE

Simply the best guitar work I have ever heard. I particularly like the Live in The Air Age version. This song brings back the memories for me. Be Bop were the local heroes for so many in the Leeds/Wakefield area back in the mid to late 70's and when I was first introduced to this song I was gobsmacked. A tuneful guitar was able to represent area and places I knew . I think it was the first time I realised the power of a tune. There is a wonderful pay off at the the end of the song where all the instruments join together and play a repeated motif which for me represents the innocent happiness of lazy early teen summers.

.
3, GREEN DAY

WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS

'

I dismissed them as third wave yank punk posers. Never really listened to anything they released. Then they do this to me!
This song makes me cry. Its measured anguish allows you to substitute your own sorrows for the ones referred to in the lyrics. This makes it intensely personal and moving. At the same time it has deep rooted hope at its heart. When the drums and bass come in you cant help but feel lifted. When The Erics first played this at rehearsal we all looked at each other and said "f**king hell this is good". We do virtually nothing with this song, just play it as it is. Its going to be an all time classic.

2, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

THUNDER ROAD

;

"There were ghosts in the eyesOf all the boys you sent awayThey haunt this dusty beach roadIn the skeleton frames of burned out ChevroletsThey scream your name at night in the streetYour graduation gown lies in rags at their feetAnd in the lonely cool before dawnYou hear their engines roaring onBut when you get to the porch they're goneOn the wind so Mary climb inIt's town full of losersAnd I'm pulling out of here to win"

Bruce Springsteens lyrics have changed over the years, becoming more political and less focused on 'cars and girls', this however, is the ultimate car and girl song. I love its unashamed hopefullness. Right from the opening lines:

"The screen door slamsMary' dress wavesLike a vision she dances across the porchAs the radio playsRoy Orbison singing for the lonelyHey that's me and I want you onlyDon't turn me home againI just can't face myself alone againDon't run back insideDarling you know just what I'm here forSo you're scared and you're thinkingThat maybe we ain't that young anymoreShow a little faith there's magic in the nightYou ain't a beauty but hey you're alrightOh and that's alright with me"

this song has me at its mercy.
I have made more fresh starts than most and this is my anthem!!

1, THE WHO

I WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN

;

The Who, especially Pete Townshend and Keith Moon are my ultimate musical heroes. Keith because he put drummers at the front of the band and Pete because he writes songs like this.

Its an all time classic, when you play this song nothing can follow it. Its got politics, power chords, drum solos and screams. The song writing is first class with both album and shortened single versions working well.

Everytime The Erics play this there is a immeadiate atmosphere on stage. We simply love this song. For rock musicians it has everything.

I first bought the album Who's Next, in 1974. When this track came on I was amazed, it was the moment when I realised what I wanted to do as a drummer. Thank god that years later Sam was able to do an arrangement of the song so that my dream could be fulfilled. Now its fulfilled most Saturday nights of the year in pubs around Leed and Cas.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAH!!

THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER!!
.
OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS WE WILL BE TELLING YOU WHAT WE CLASS TO BE OUR FAVE SONGS OF ALL TIME
.
FIRST UP
.
PHILS TOP FIVE
.
I've been giving my top 5 favourite songs some thought today and I've found it really hard. There are loads of songs I love but having to choose only 5 out of so many feels like I'm being dis-loyal to some of my fav bands.Anyway I short-listed 20 songs out of which I've selected my top five. These 20 are listed on my own blogsite - www.phileric.blogspot.com - with a more in depth reason behind my number 1 choice. My top 5 are as follows:
.
5.
QUEEN -WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER
.
.
An absolute belter of a song writen by Brian May for the film Highlander. It is played as the Highlander's wife dies of old age, and he realises there is a price to pay for being immortal.
The song of course touches on the subject of who we are, why we are here, and what happens when we die. Do we actually want to live forever?
It is a very dramatic song, almost hymn like, and builds to an almighty crescendo (I think I spelt that right) with the famous Queen operatic style vocals. Then the song dies away................beautiful.
.
4. DEACON BLUE - YOUR SWAYING ARMS
.Rick Ross is one of the most talented songwriters I have heard and his voice is gritty & fierce but fits his style perfectly. This coupled with Lorraine Macintosh's angelic backing vocals make Deacon Blue a truly polished outfit. I was stuck between this song & 'One day I'll go walking, which are both are from the Fellow Hoodlums album. Swaying arms is just a lovely song & for me sums up how I would like to be when the kids have flown the nest & there's just me & Linda left. Love the kids to pieces, always will, but I have to remember she was there first.
.
3. KIRSTY MACOLL - TITANIC DAYS
.
Do
you
ever
get
that
sinking
feeling?
.
I love this song & infact the whole 'Titanic Days' album. In my book it's her best work God bless her departed soul. The best part of this is the ending whereby the effect of the Titanic's journey to the bottom of the sea is created by a rising bass line against a bubbling orchestration dragging down under the surface. Then the song fades out as if the ship has just surrendered to the power of mother nature & just effortly drops into the murky depths. You are left with the sound of the waves washing against the shore and a very soothing, but eerie sound of a quartet continuing to play on. Rather like the bit in the 'Titanic' film where the quartet refuse to stop playing as the ship goes down. Marvellous.
.
2. GIN BLOSSOMS - LOST HORIZONS
.
.
The first track off their first album. I loved the sound of these guys from the first moment I heard them and when I formed 'Stuff' in 1996 it was the kind of sound I was looking for. Problem was that it wasn't the sound that the rest of Stuff were looking for so we didn't last very long. This album is a pure stick it in your car stereo, turn it up full whack, sing along and put yer foot down, kind of an album. It is awesome (I like that word) & when Lost horizons kicks off it just gives me that feel good factor. I love the line in the song that says "she had nothing left to say - so she said she loved me - I stood there grateful for the lie"
Sad that these guys packed it in - disillusioned with the music industry - can you believe it?
Just goes to show there's no point sweating your bollocks off trying get your songs recognised. Might aswell say "Fuck it - I'm off to see The Erics"

So there we are - from 5 to 2 - suprisingly no Beatles, Van Halen, Springsteen or Satellites although I love em all & it was hard leaving them out.
.
It will also be suprising to most that my number 1 choice is by a lesser known artist.
Tina Arena - 'Heaven help my heart.'
.
.
I don't expect any one of you to know the song or who she is but this song is unbelievably personal to me and that's why it's my number 1. She has a cracking voice and the production on the song, and the whole 'Don't Ask' album from where it is taken, is superb. If you want to read more on this please read my blog pages.

Cheers - Phil
